Today is Christopher Walken’s birthday. He was born Ronald Walken on 31st March 1943 in Queens, New York City. He is 71 today. But, he has made so many memorable cameos, guest appearances and turned mediocre films into very watchable fare, where to start? From Mousehunt to  Annie Hall, from Waynes World 2 to Biloxi Blues, pick your own favourite Walken moments. From dancing on the ceiling for Spike Jonze genius video for Fat Boy Slim’s Weapon of Choice to scooping an Oscar in The Deerhunter.  From Bond villain to cartoon baddie in Antz. Here are my top 10 picks of Walken films I love. Enjoy the memories.

Quentin Tarantino

Every time I drive through Walthamstow I think about Quentin Tarantino, not because Walthamstow resembles a setting of one of his movies but because there is a bicycle shop called Reservoir Cogs. An impact felt by his first film in 1992. A mere 22 years ago. We’d never even heard of QT back then. Today is his birthday, 27th March, and nowadays, the release of a new QT film (the fact that his name has been reduced to just letters tells it’s own story) is an event.

Here is a selection of his directorial outings to enjoy, he has written a few other scripts, acted a bit and produced a few but his directing is what sets his apart when he directs things he has written, we all take notice.

Freebie and the Bean

Today it is Alan Arkin AND James Cann’s birthdays. They starred together in a very early cop buddy movie called Freebie and the Bean. What are the odds of two actors, thrown together in a film having the same birthday? Two all time great actors in a very funny film.

1982

The face of Simone Signoret on the Paris Metro movie posters in March 1982 looked even older than her 61 years. She was still a box office draw, but the film, L’étoile du Nord (1982), would be her last theatrical release. Born Henrietta Charlotte Simone Kaminker on March 25th 1921 she died on September 30th 1985 aged just 64. A true icon of French and World cinema.

Etoile 1

Signoret had a long film apprenticeship during World War II, mostly as an extra and occasionally getting to speak a single line. She was working without an official permit during the Nazi occupation of France, because her father, who had fled to England, was Jewish. Working almost all the time, she made enough as an extra to support her mother and three younger brothers.

Simone 1 Simone 2 Simone 3 Simone 4 Simone 5Simone 22

Starting her career in the early 1940’s she honed her craft in French films rarely seen outside their home territory. Then Charles Crichton (The Lavebder Hill Mob, TheTitfield Thunderbolt) cast her with Robert Beatty, Gordon Jackson, Jack Warner (Dixon of Dock Green) James Robertson Justice in Against The Wind (1948)

Room At The Top (1959) Her breakthrough to international stardom came at the age of 38 with  Room at the Top. Her Alice Aisgill, an unhappily married woman who hopes she has found true love, radiated real warmth in all of her scenes and won her an Oscar. Directed by Jack Clayton (The Innocents, The Great Gatsby) and co-starring Laurence Harvey. Signoret and her second husband, Yves Montand, were refused visas to enter the United States; their progressive political activities did not sit well with the ultra-conservative McCarthy-era mentality that gripped the US at the time. They got visas in 1960 so Montand, as a singer, could perform in New York and San Francisco. They were in Los Angeles in March 1960 when Signoret received the Oscar for best actress and stayed on so Montand could play opposite Marilyn Monroe in Let’s Make Love (1960).

The Coolest Man That Ever Lived

March 24th. Birthday of Steve McQueen. Sadly he died in 1980 aged just 50. One of the most iconic film stars of all time. He made some of the coolest films and here are a selection to celebrate what would have been his birthday.:

The Blob (1958).

Cracking sci-fi film. Alien lifeform that grows and grows as it eats everything in its path. The last time Steven McQueen would billed, he was Steve from this film on.

Just two short years and Steve went from scared teenager (even though he was almost thirty) to fully fledged film star.

The Magnificent Seven (1960)

A remake of Kurasawa’s Seven Samurai, a brilliant re-working with an astonishingly memorable theme tune and an amazing group of actors (including two that have been relegated to trivia questions, Brad Dexter and Horst Buchholtz). One of the greatest ever westerns, I would have it in my top ten westerns of all time alongside – The Outlaw Josey Wales, The Lawman, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Open Range, Once Upon A Time in the West, The Wild Bunch, The Professionals, They Dies With Their Boots On, Unforgiven, (with a special mention for A Big Hand For The Little Lady).

The Great Escape (1963)

Surely one of the most watched films of all time. Similar to The Magnificent Seven, stick an amazing cast together and the audience will root for at least one of their favourites. Three of the Mag Seven (McQueen, Bronson, Coburn) re-united. One of the all time great chase scenes with Steve on his motorbike. Awesome.

The late, great Russ Meyer, purveyor of enormous fun films from the 1950’s to 2001 would have been 92 today but he popped his clogs and went to the great cleavage in the sky in 2004.

Russ Meyter 5 Russ Meyer 2 Russ Meyer 3 Russ Meyer 4 Russ Meyer 9 Russ Meyer 1

The son of a policeman and a nurse, Russ Meyer began winning prizes at 15 with his amateur films. He spent World War II in Europe as a combat cameraman. After the war, he became a professional photographer, shooting some of the earliest Playboy centerfolds. He made his film directorial debut with The Immoral Mr Teas aka Mr Teas and his Playthings (1959), the first nudie (softcore sex) film to make a profit over a million dollars!

Mr Teas 1 Mr Teas 2Mr Teas 3

This  led to a string of self-financed films that gradually became more bizarre, violent, and cartoonish.

In the mid-1960s, he established his style with his Gothic period, a quartet of black-and-white films: Lorna (1964),

Today is Luc Besson’s birthday. He is 55 . Happy Birthday Luc.

Luc 1 Luc 2 Luc 4

I was lucky enough to work at Palace and we bought the distribution rights to Nikita and we had a great deal of fun releasing this classic film. I took a buyer from HMV to an early screening and he named his daughter Nikita after the film as he enjoyed it so much.
Then when I was at 20th Century Fox we released Subway and I created a special edition (Version Longue) video box set of The Big Blue.
Luc has directed 23 films but has produced over 120!

I have selected 11 films to show here, so many classics to pick from.

In 1983 (aged 24) he produced and directed The Last Battle  with Jean Reno.

Last Battle 1 Last Battle 2 Last Battle 3 Last Battle 3 Last Battle 4  Last Battle 6 Last Battle 7 Last Battle 8 Last Battle 9 Last Battle 10

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pIWmjs_1JzA

A post apocalyptic view of the world with only one line of dialogue. Two men battle vicious thugs for food, shelter and their lives.

Next came Subway (1985) with Christophe Lambert, Richard Bohringer, the astonishingly beautiful Isabelle Adjani, Jean-Hugues Anglade and Jean Reno. They play various weirdos all living in the Paris Metro system, underground and away from the eyes of the law.

Subway 1 Subway 2 Subway 3 Subway 4 Subway 5 Subway 6 Subway 7 Subway 8 Subway 9 Subway 10

In 1988, he wrote, produced and directed The Big Blue. A hit all over the world and a massive sales brochure for Taormina. The action takes place around the world free diving chamionships as Enzo (Jean Reno) and Jaques (Jean-Marc Barr) dive without airtanks. The film opened the Cannes Film Festival in 1988 and played for a whole year in cinemas in France.

Today Sir Michael Caine is 81 years old. Happy Birthday. Interestingly, for me anyway, just before my Mum passed away she was awarded an MBE. We plotted up to Buckingham Palace to get the award and the same day, Michael Caine became Sir Michael. He signed the little brochure you are given and the fact that on such an auspicious occasion for himself, he took the time to sign my Mum’s brochure. Top man. So, to celebrate here are just a few of my favourite Michael Caine films with a few clips, trailers and superb photographs,

From Harry Palmer to Harry Brown. One of the greatest actors of this or any generation. I could have selected another dozen great films to include. Anyone who has this amount of “classics” in their locker must be a bloody good actor.

Happy Birthday Sir Michael.

For an actor to only make 5 feature films in a tragically short career, and those five films to be   – The Godfather, The Godfather Part II, Dog Day Afternoon and The Deerhunter and The Conversation are all classics,  you have some track record.

Starting off in a short The American Way (1962)

Raúl Rafael Juliá y Arcelay (March 9, 1940 – October 24, 1994) is probably only known (especially by the younger generation) as Gomez Addams in the Addams Family films, but he was a much better actor than just that.  He was born in Puerto Rico,  in San Juan, he gained interest in acting while still in school. Upon completing his studies, he decided to pursue a career in acting. After performing locally for some time, he was convinced by entertainment personality Orson Bean  to move and work in New York City. Juliá, who had been bilingual since his childhood, soon gained interest in Broadway and Off Broadway plays. He performed in mobile projects, including The Puerto Rican Traveling Theatre.

Juliá was eventually noticed by Joseph Papp, who offered him work in the New York Shakespeare Festival.  After gaining notoriety, he received roles in two television series,  Love of Life and Sesame Street:

Sesame 1 Sesame 2

For his performance in Two Gentlemen of Verona , he received a nomination for the Tony Award and won a Drama Desk Award.
