Sergio Leone, director of just 12 feature films yet he is spoken of in reverential terms. And why not, as a noted critic once said. Pick your favourite, Once Upon A Time In America, Once Upon A Time In The West, The  Good The Bad and The Ugly, A Fistful of Dollars, For A Few a Dollars More. He would have been 85 today but sadly died in 1989. Can you believe that he made The Good The Bad and The Ugly the same year that England won the World Cup. Bloody hell. I was ten.

Possibly the best opening to a film ever, Jack Elam and the fly, Charlie Bronson and his harmonica, Woody Strode drinking from his hat. What’s not to love.

Well, that makes me feel better. Happy Birthday Sergio, let’s hope one day they find a missing manuscript for a film he would have made……
