Happy Birthday to the great Alain Delon. 78 today. Star of some of the most memorable European films seen over the past five decades. Rocco and his Brothers (1960), Le Samurai (1967), Le Cercle Rouge (1970), Plein Soleil (1960), L’Eclisse (1962), The Leopard (1963), Girl on a Motorcycle (1968), Borsalino (1970), Un Flic (1972), Swann in Love (1984). A favourite? Le Samurai probably. A Jean- Pierre Melville classic as a hit man’s life spirals out of control. One of the coolest portrayals of a hitman in cinema history.

Jean – Pierre Melville and Alain Delon.

He owns a restaurant called “Camargue” in Nice, France. If you go to Nice check it out. He features on the cover of The Smiths album “The Queen Is Dead” in a shot from L’Insoumis (The Unvanquished) directed by Alain Cavalier (1964). ”

Quite a few bands have written songs called or about Alain Delon including – Baustelle (an Italian rock group), The Margarets (Indie rock), White Town (Hair Like Alain Delon), oh and Madonna’s song Beautiful Killer is a tribute to him.

I do have a soft spot for Girl on a Motorcycle as Marianne Faithful looks amazing in her leathers (and out of them).

Rocco and his Brothers is an all time classic and should be seen by everyone.

The Leopard, as it’s Movember, Alain bought a stick on moustache for the month!

If I owned my own cinema I would put on an Alain Delon retrospective and just blow people away.

Happy Birthday Alain.
