Well, Burt Lancaster would have been 100 years old today. Born in 1913. (It’s also David Schwimmer’s birthday but I don’t give a shit about that).

Lancaster has always been a favourite of mine, who doesn’t love him in The Sweet Smell of Success, Birdman of Alcatraz, Lawman, Atlantic City, Elmer Gantry, Local Hero, The Rainmaker, From Here To Eternity, Trapeze, Field of Dreams, The Osterman Weekend, Zulu Dawn, The Professionals and so many more. What a fantastic canon of films. He made enough classics for 10 top actors. I have my own personal favourites, The Sweet Smell of Success with Tony Curtis on top form and Alexander MacKendrick directing one of only 10 films that included Whisky Galore, The Ladykillers, The Man in the White Suit as well, amazing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZtE8r-VTsPY

The Professionals with Lee Marvin, Woody Strode, Robert Ryan and the incomparable Claudia Cardinale plus a little Jack Palance thrown in for good measure. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qD07cao4O2k

Local Hero is also a favourite. “Oldsen, I could grow to love this place.” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R4WQZbGMrl4
Tough guy actor with a penchant for the unusual. If you’ve never seen any of these, do yourself a favour and watch them all.

Burt, we will never see a star like you again.
