Please, please don’t let Hollywood remake this film. Why would they touch it? Sol Yurick’s book was adapted by Walter Hill ( a particular favourite of ours – genius director of Extreme Prejudice, 48 Hours, Southern Comfort, The Long Riders, The Driver) and turned into an all time classic.
The basic premise is New York gangs meet to discuss taking over the city. The instigator of this meet, Cyrus, is shot and The Warriors get the blame. They have to “bop” their way back to Coney Island fighting all the other gangs on the way.
The gangs are the best background to a film, The Orphans, The Baseball Furies, The Lizzie’s, The Punks, The Rogues, The Gramercy Riffs,
The Boppers, The Boyle Avenue Runners, Electric Eliminators, Gladiators, Hi-Hats, Hurricanes, Jones Street Boys, Moonrunners, Panzers, Saracens, Satans Mothers, Savage Huns, Van Cortlandt Rangers among many others.
During the shoot the local gangs (the Homicides) threatened the crew for filming actors wearing colours on their turf.
James Remar (Dexter’s Dad) won the role of Ajax after turning over a large table in the audition room.
After several violent incidents that occurred at various showings of the film, the producers decided to change the poster as a way of cutting down on the violence. The original poster featured the logo as well as a picture of several tough looking gang members. The second poster just featured the logo against a white background. This poster. If it is an original, is getting more valuable every day.
Grab one and keep it safe.
Check out the Warriors action figures as well.
